Skiathos has been inhabited since prehistoric times and until today it was always called Skiathos. The name of Skiathos is rumored to come from the words “shadow” and “Athos”, and they say that on a clear day you can see Mount Athos fading in the depths of the horizon. In the city of Skiathos is preserved the house of Alexandros Papadiamantis (one of the most important Greek writers) who was born and lived on the island. In the port of the city, on a small peninsula there is the Venetian fortress (Bourtzi) where today the Maritime Museum operates. The Primary school of the island, which now houses the cultural center of Skiathos, was built inside the fortress with the care and expense of Andreas Syggrou. The beauty of Skiathos spreads everywhere. From the lush pine trees to the full bars and restaurants, Skiathos invites you to enter its climate.

WHAT TO DO, WHAT TO SEE
Lalaria: This beautiful beach has made Skiathos famous all over the world. Green waters, white pebbles, very high, steep cliffs. A place that young and old will love.
Koukounaries and Strofilia lake: Discover the second most famous beach of Skiathos, Koukounaries. A vast, golden sandy beach, which has been characterized as the most natural in the Mediterranean. It is embraced by a dense pine forest, behind which the lake of Strofilia awaits you, a unique habitat that hosts rare species of birds.
Chora and Bourtzi: Upon entering the port, you are greeted by one of the most important sights of Skiathos, Bourtzi: a pine-covered islet that houses the ruins of the Venetian fortress, built there since the 13th century. Opposite you, the town of Skiathos, which stretches amphitheatrically with the crimson roofs of the houses, looks as if it wants to detach from the sea.
The house-museum of Papadiamantis: It is one of the most important sights of Skiathos and you will find it in Chora.
Skiathos Castle: You will discover it at the northern end of the island. From the 14th century it protected the Skiathos from pirates. Here, the art is alive in 2 of the 22 old churches that survived: magnificent frescoes in the Genesis of Christ and built-in ceramics in Agios Nikolaos.
The sea caves of Skiathos: Holidays in Skiathos means exploration and the sea caves of Skiathos are waiting for you. One boat is enough and you will discover them: Punta, Fonissa and Altanous.
The Monastery of Evangelistria: Its fortified walls look like the monastery of Mount Athos. Since 1794 it is located in the northeastern part of the mountain range of Skiathos.
